Kitty litter is not perlite.  The clay types probably are the ground up 
bentonite clay--I haven't used them in years, but I still don't think that 
they easily make something like a clay slip.  This is perlite.

advantages of cat litter are that it is ground up so it mixes readily, and
you can buy small quantities (10 to 50 lbs) at your local grocery store.
