I've been reading Jared Diamond's Collapse.  One of his reasons for 
economic/social/political collapse is deforestation.  In the Pacific Islands 
he and somebody else made a list of physical things they thought might have 
helped the process along, one (actually two) of the big ones was lack of 
volcanic ash--either from the island's own volcanoes or from the Indonesian 
ring of fire, carried by the upper winds.

(And apple harvests for a couple of years after Mt St Helens blew were 
great)

So the stuff is not just good for COB (ha! worked it in!)
