NATURAL BUILDING WORKSHOPS

IN LAFAYETTE, CA
(East Bay / 40 min. BART ride from SF, 5 min. walk to site.) 


NATURAL PAINTS AND PLASTERS
OCT. 21-23, 2005
Friday 10am-5pm/ 7-9pm Slideshow
Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm
Cost: $195.00
• Includes Test Samples you make and take home.

Gain experience making and applying natural paints, plasters, & finishes for interior and exterior surfaces. In this hands on workshop, we will have the unique opportunity to work on restoring and refinishing the earthen walls of a 1949 adobe, owner built home. Learn how these techniques are easily applied to your own home, as we will teach application to conventional building materials such as plywood and sheet rock.   
Highlights include dispersal methods of natural pigments, work with simple earth plasters and traditional adobe Alis (clay paint), kaolin plaster, lime washes, and casein/milk paints.

Come prepared to get your hands in the mud and leave with a basic working
knowledge of natural building materials and techniques used throughout the world. 

Adobe, Cob, Straw Bale, Cob-Cordwood, and Slip-Straw will be covered in class time along with direct experience through hands on building and demonstrations of most of these techniques.
Highlights include learning how multiple mediums work together, the art of making adobe bricks. See, feel and work with us to improve this 56 year-old owner-built adobe home from local materials on this peaceful five acres of land.

Community Built Projects Using Cob, Adobe, Slip-Straw, and other Earthen Building Techniques!  Featuring Wood Fired Ovens, Rumford Fireplaces,

Cob Benches, Kiosks, a Waldorf School in Patagonia, and 

Meka’s Two-Story Cob House In Southern Oregon.

*Instructors:

Michael "Meka" Bunch attended his first Cob Cottage Co. workshop in 1996 and proceeded to build a two-story cob studio in Wolf Creek, Oregon, offering workshops during 4 years of the building process.  Ever since, Meka has been muddin' it up, locally and abroad, demonstrating and teaching natural building techniques via public events and workshops.  He has worked and played with Cob Cottage Co., Becky Bee of Groundworks, and most recently in Thailand and S. America, with Janell Kapoor of Kleiwerks Natural Building. He has also co-taught at two of the annual Village Building Convergence events in Portland, Oregon
 

Emily Hansgen started making adobe bricks in 2003, helping to establish an adobe brick yard in Asheville, North Carolina. Since then, she has been part of building several earthen structures both independently and through a ten day workshop and an eight week apprenticeship with Kleiwerks Natural Building. Emily has a special interest in natural finishes.

Enrollment Policy and Payment Information:

Workshops are on a first come first served basis and fill up quickly, with a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 15 participants. 
A non-refundable deposit of $80 is required to confirm your enrollment by:
*Oct. 10 for Paints and Plasters
*Nov. 7 for Natural Building Primer 
Balance due at the start of the workshop.
You may choose to attend both workshops for only $300. In this case, a deposit of $120 guarantees your place.
