For living roofs, Ianto advises using EPDM, also known as "pond liner". 
  This is a very thick rubber - 45 mil - similar to an inner tube.  
Nearly indestructible.  Fairly inexpensive.  I wouldn't use 
polyethylene sheeting, which gets pinholes if you just walk on it.
