The best possible solution to the whole "Building Code" dilemma, at least from a cobber's viewpoint, or the viewpoint of any truly green builder (and not those contractor's claiming to build green using a whole new array of manufactured and very expensive green products) would be for there to be an alternative to the "must have" permit.

I can't see any reason why any reasonable local government wouldn't allow a cob builder (or earthship builder or strawbale builder or whatever have you) to sign a waiver stating they take full legal responsibility for the home they build and their own well-being and safety within the home, and promise to not sell that property with that home still standing UNLESS the buyer agrees (however fooloish that might seem to the building code people) to also sign a waiver protecting any individual, business or government agency from any legal responsibilities should the roof fall in on them.

Or how about an experimental building permit? I've heard some places have them.

If part of this is about money and property values let the bastards assign some average value on the property based on a comparable stick-built home if it had been built on that land. I'd sign a waiver, my wife would sign a waiver, my kids would sign a waiver, my mother would even sign a waiver like that if they could build the type of house they would really love to live in. My mother is in her back yard this weekend building a garden shed, and she can't believe that the city required her to get a building permit for a non-attached 8x10 garden shed, a place to put her rakes and hoes and pots.
