[Cob] Building CodesShody Ryon qi4u at yahoo.comSun May 6 18:17:52 CDT 2007
Hi, If the city code offcials are worried about the structure falling in under comprestive or lateral load, why would putting said structure under load not satisfy that part of the requirement? It would directly test what is being questioned, and punishment for poor build practices would be poetically appropiate. I don't agree with retributive justice, but why tap dance around the issue and the question and not address it directly? As to degrading under wet conditions, could water be sprayed on the structure for a determined length of time with analysis afterward? Special attention could be focused on roof and ground water drains. most building will fail if exposed to water inappropiatley over time, cob should not be singled out in this way? I have been asking this question with expecting a response up until now, but I beginning to feel frustrated with the way people approach this subject. If cob is as good or better than other methods, lets see it in real time! If not, wouldn't anyone like to know?? So who is going to explain what this idea wouldn't work? The obvious reason is that codes are not about safty, they are about marketing building material. If that is the case, lets publish that with enless letters to the editors, but why not start with the building department? If that goes now here, then we know where the area lies, and it is not about building safe buildings. Perhaps some building department use safety as their guide and others only do buiness with the deep pockets of big business... granted people should be able to opt out of the permit process, but people should also be able to opt in with paid for on site direct testing of what is being questioned and what the likely weakness of any given building material. One possible problem with opting out is flying debris from a building that can not with stand wind loads and up lift on the roof.
