I agree with Cat that it's a good idea to look around at what's local and
what works.

If you're building in the great white north, I'd suggest doing some research
into passive solar. If you're going to have trees in front of the house to
the south, it's a good idea for them to be deciduous, rather than pines,
which will still have their leaves on them in winter and essentially create
shade when you don't want it. Best case scenario - a slope or hill facing to
the south with a meadow or field to the south. You get protection from north
winds and maximum sun in winter.
