[Cob] finding statsShody Ryon qi4u at yahoo.comThu May 24 01:55:56 CDT 2007
Are any cob houses built with gothic arch windows and doors? I assume that cob walls are usually built lower rather than taller so there is not usually room for a lot of wall between the top of the window and the roof for a gothic arch (that would not require a header), and the load on the wall would increase from wind and seismic forces and incresed labor of more cob which would usually be more of a problem than most would wish to deal with. As for up-lift on the roof, I imagine the load is spread from the rafters to the wall in conventional framing by blocking between the rafter that are tico cliped to the top plate, is there a common way to make a possitive connection like that when installing rafters on a cob wall? Perhaps by installing bamboo vertically in the cob at the distance of the rafters, say 24" O.C. and running the rafters along side of the bamboo and connecting the rafters to that with bolts or dowels?
