I just stumbled across this PDF file from Edward Crocker who is an architect 
who studied failure in adobe in New Mexico.

There is alot of good info on why earthen mixes are the best, and why 'new' 
adobe structures have failed. He also studies adobe in seismic areas...so 
this is an article that might apply to people who are dealing with code.

Good reading, either way.
