[Cob] cob walls for stablesJoe Skeesick joe at skeesick.comSat Jul 4 13:38:15 CDT 2009
I have no doubt that cob would more than withstand a horse kicking, however what I would probably be inclined to do would be to build in a rub rail on the wall to keep the horse from eroding away the wall by constant rubbing. An offset rail that could be replaced after several years of rubbing would be a much easier thing to maintain than going in and building a wall back up. You're lucky to have many extent examples in your area. Try and find a local example of cob animal housing (not just horses) and see what might have been done. Of course if it's anything like England most of the barns have been converted to high end homes and the practical elements of those building removed. One of the questions we have is whether cob on its own (with lime plaster), would be strong enough to withstand horses kicks, or if we should include some powdered lime to the mix to make it even stronger. There is a great tradition of building with cob in this local area, as many of the old cottages are built from the grey/yellow 'daub' in the ground, which unfortunately makes bad quality land for farming but great for building. Im quite a purist and would ideally just use clay/sand/straw but my wife is concerned that wouldn't be enough to withstand a full kick from a large horse. Any advice much appreciated. -- Andy Dunn www.luibh.ie andy at luibh.ie 00 353 86 0230879 Web Development & Hosting PHP | Perl/CGI | mySQL | Javascript AJAX | jQuery | CakePHP | RubyOnRails _______________________________________________ Coblist mailing list Coblist at deatech.com http://www.deatech.com/mailman/listinfo/coblist
