[Cob] could cob be masonry?

A friend who has a Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Degree said the 
reason it doesn't rot is there isn't any air or light getting to it. 
When the straw is enclosed in clay slip (which it is when mixed well), 
it doesn't get either of those. Then, of course, when it dries, it is 
even more protected.
