[Cob] Are roof overhangs absolutely necessary?

If the house has been built in a place that most time of the winter is
raining, overhangs are neccecary to avoid replastering every couple of
years.
Also overhangs could be essential when you have strong wind flows that give
an angle to the rain driving it directly on your wall. Extending (lets say
30cm) your roof you leave only the bottom of the wall(which is built by
stone) to get wet.
