Cat here, In the rural areas there are no codes, no zonings, if you want to get a building permit I guess they won't object. In the towns they have codes and if you are a business yes, or expect to get it insured or a loan yes but if your willing to, do your thing out in the woods by the seat of your pants and you don't agitate a neighbor you can do what you will. This applies to your neighbors also, so you build your cob home and barn set up your organic garden and kick back on your porch only to find that neighbor to the left has put in a trailer park, and the neighbor to your right has just set up a saw mill and there goes your tranquility!!

My answer was to buy with care, and get as much acreage around me as I could. Now however I feel that this approach is only adding to rural sprawl. This codelessness may be coming to a close here since the towers fell many have been coming to WV with there mind think and will no doubt influence the legislation. If just a few of us can get some solid examples up before then we may be able to include earth building into the structure without allot of fuss?

RE: the "WV has no code in rural areas." I seem to recall reading somewhere (Mother Earth News - a preacher that built a wooden house for about $800, about 14x16'?, 1999?) that there is a Federal Housing code that deals with minimum standards for housing, and that area may be defined as well - like what constitutes "urban, suburban (suburbia), agricultural and rural" lands. I cannot locate the source on this so ifanyone has info, be glad to re-learn this -
