Good advice from Jill.

If you can find something that is being worked on without benefit of 
expensive workshop--i.e., one where you can just show up, without the paying 
participants feeling that they are being ripped off, that would be good too. 
  Might want to call about bringing an 8-year-old, although cob building is 
frequently billed as family friendly, so it's probably fine.

Take your family to the places in Oregon to see some cob houses that are 
done. Or that place in WA, not too far from you. Talking about mud houses 
and going in one is totally different. And it just might inspire you to 
start!
