Cob: RE: Re: Metal Roofing

Someone yesterday was inquiring about latex paint on cob structures (worried
about peeling). Peeling would be the least of your worries. According to
information I obtained from the "Cob Bricks" website (company in Devon,
England that has been making cob bricks for many years), it is important to
stick with the limestone plastering methods because they are "breathable"
and will allow water to evaporate from your cob structure after rains, etc.
Structures covered with cement, latex paints, etc., do not allow for this
evaporation and they warned that many cottage owners have come home one day
to find their older cottages collapsed into heaps of rubble and dust (with
no forewarning!). Looks like the old methods (tried and true) are best.
Good luck!
