wait a minute, Dan. I've been following this list now for quite some time. (although never actively participated until now) Darel has contributed a wealth of information for us all and I, for one, hope he continues to do so. Darel and Shannon have a different point of view, both are educated and intelligent and relevant.
>From a practical point of view I can kind of settle the disagreement here. When developing models of buildings for sizing hvac equipment, the input we use for metal roofing is R=0. It contributes nothing to the R value of the assembly.
Darel the thermal bridging you are talking about is more of an issue if you use steel framing members such as metal studs. Actually you have more heat loss thru the thermal bridging of the wood framing than from the thin exterior layer of a metal roof.
For lay people (non-technical types) that don't quite understand what I'm talking about, what this means is that the R30 insulation that you put between the wood joists actually translates to an overall R value of the assembled roof of quite a bit lower (depending on the framing spacing and other materials) ~ R25 or less.

Darel, why don't you start your own list so that you can send the perfect questions and answers to your yourself. That way you won't offend the rest of us earth minded idiots? I have asked to be removed from the list because of your piety. Your "look-down-the-nose", "know-more-than-you", attitude really sucks. Were you beat up by bullies as a child? And now through the faceless internet you can finally get back at of 'em? There are tons; of GOOD people on this list that are trying to learn and grow. Experts? Not all, but at least they are REAL people without the self proclaimed intelligence that you try to put forward. You sir, are an ass. Dan - on his way out the door - Vander Vere
