I got into an argument with the plumbing guy down at Home Depot. He
asked me why I needed to plumb a small sink, and I told him I was
putting in a 'garden greywater system'. He told me that it was against
the law, and he couldn't help me, and that I would contaminate my
neighbors. I said, "With what, garlic?"

Good answer...he is wrong on that, but city inspectors do keep an eye so
bacterial growth from kitchen sinks, etc don't infect water/streams
nearby, this CAN be a problem by DIY greywater folks.
. but there is a lot of info on it, and if you surge-tank the water, and
follow basic guidelines I see no problem ever.
Art Ludwig's book on Branched Drain systems ( instead of all to one
spot) allows one to plumb to various areas outside , i.e. off the
master bath, off the laundry room to places one needs to water the
yard/garden etc.
PS the core area great idea..have fun and do NOT let the planner drive
you crazy..all of society is geared to keep us in line and behaving
conventionally...you get no positive reinforcement that you are doing
the right thing (outside of like-minded friends or folks on email
groups like this)
