Jenny, there is clumping bamboo and running bamboo.  the clumping kind 
will not send out runners all over, and stay where you out it widening 
only a little.

the running kind can take over...

I have some clumping bamboo growing  very well here in rainy cold N 
Calif.  it  grew 20 ft in just 2 years, seems to have slowed down this 
year due to  very high temps and sun...unusual for us.
