as an electrician i cant keep quiet on this subject so here goes
you cant direct bury branch circuit wire (no conduit)
i also would use the smurf tubeing as aluminum will corrode (such as mc cable)
i love useing mc cable but it has its limits and dirt is one
if you use smurf tubing and if your wires ever go bad then just repull new or if your wise and OVER-SIZED your conduit you can add more circuit and being an electrician for a school i cant tell you how conviniant this aspect is
i would never use romex in any house i built and here are the reasons
1 its ampacity is lower than wire in conduit (and if you were to pack dirt around it it goes down even more thus alowing heat build-up)
2 on long runs through a hot oklahoma summer attic romex thats rated for 15 amp (#12) cango clear down to only 6 amp which is why the inspectors are requireing #10 romex in an attic
3 MICE

but remeber to use the right size of conduit and wires if you dont want to spend the money on a electrical code book then at least get an ugly's handbook.
one of the best reasons that i can think of for useing conduit is that smurf pipe is cheep and you can run your tubeing keep your bends smooth and no more than three 90 degree bends per run and keep your runs short and later when you have wore time and money you can pull the wire
