>Even though a rumford fireplace is about efficient as they get I had to look at rumford.com to learn what a rumford fireplace is. I wonder how a polished sheet of stainless steel or something would go, curved around the back of the fire, to reflect heat in a similar way to many electric radiators. Behind the metal would be insulated to avoid wasting energy in heating the brick chimney. To me this idea seems cheap, easy to install, easy to clean and must be more reflective than bricks. By being curved, the metal would not buckle as it expands, but would need to be able to move, maybe just being attached firmly to the fireplace at either end.
