1.) the clay-sand ratio you mention was this by volume, i.e., 1 bucket :
3 buckets or
    by weight, ie.,  1 pound clay  : 3 pounds sand

2.) Also what proportion of straw did you use.  What kind of guide to
know you had just the right amount?

3.) What lengths of straw did you use?
