[Cob] post&Beam infill questionsorion walker orion_w at hotmail.comWed Feb 25 11:45:41 CST 2004
Hi Folks, I just bought myself a nice diesel truck (running on biodiesel) moving me another step along the way to building a cobin this summer. As I'm finalizing my floor plan design I've got some questions about cob as infill in a post and beam situation. John, you mentioned that the cob needs to be tied in to the post and beam structure. Can you, or others, help me through the specifics. So far my floor plan is about 20' by 20, but it isn't really square. My idea is to keep the roof simple by making it 20' by 20' square, but underneath it I want the walls to bend and curve a bit. So lets say I have a post at each corner, and then one one it the middle of each side, so 10' apart around the perimiter (does that sound reasonable?). Between each of those ten foot sections I want to have some freedom to bend and curve. So, the walls would be tied in to the posts at each side, and then along the top, or buried near the top I would run a wood beam (connected sections of pole beams to match the curve of the wall) and these would be connected in to the 10' spaced posts. So, hoping that description makes sense to people, what do you think? Also, how should I tie in to the posts. I'm thinking I should do more than just hammer in nails on the posts. One more question, I've been checking out the pictures from the Mayne Island house (linked from Cobworks web site), and it seems to me that they didn't worry about tieing in their walls. anybody know more about this? Thanks, -Orion PS. Anyone interested in helping out on this project (in Mendo, northern CA) this summer, I have a nice piece of land for camping, and I'm looking for all the help I can get. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps [1]ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES.
