Deanne * NATURAL PLASTER 5-DAY INTENSIVE with Cedar Rose Guelberth from Colorado, Co-author of The Natural Plaster Book September 16-20 * NATURAL PLASTER WEEKEND with Cedar Rose September 18 and 19, 2004 * Evening SLIDESHOW by Cedar Rose September 18, 7 pm Open to public. > > We are pleased to present two plastering workshops and a Slideshow led by Cedar Rose Guelberth, Co-author of The Natural Plaster Book! The setting is a lovely wooded rural land at the Strawbale Studio, a uniquely sculptural thatched roof building ~ featured in The Beauty of Strawbale Homes by the Steens. Cedar Rose, from Colorado has been in the field of healthy homes, natural building/design and natural plastering for 25 years. She studied architecture in Europe for 3 years with a focus on natural plasters, and is one of the most experienced people in the field in the States. Assisting will be Deanne Bednar, the illustrator of The Natural Plaster Book, & The Hand-Sculpted House book, co-designer/builder of the Strawbale Studio Project. She also has a background as an art &sustainability teacher. These workshops will incorporate a wide range of information and experiences with natural plasters and finishes, as well as a tour, and hands-on activities, at the Strawbale Studio, a unique thatched-roof structure. These techniques can be used on natural buildings and existing structures. You will also have an opportunity to check out the extensive resource library, walk in the woods, and spend time with some good people. Bring your curiosity and questions! This workshop is appropriate for natural builders, artists, architects and interior design students, and all others interested in learning more about creating habitable and beautiful spaces in their lives. A wonderful PowerPoint on strategies for designing a house that uses no fossil fuels! Christina presents this throughout the state and is partially, sponsored by a grant from the State of Michigan. Wednesday 9-22 Plastering, experimenting, Resource Library, Optional viewing of videos: The Strawbale Solution, Earthships, Underground Homes, International Ecovillages, Ecological Design, and others. Thursday 9-23 through Sunday 9-26 Some folks will be staying all the way through the end of the week, and you are welcome to join us and be part of the crew or support the crew! Evening bon fires and good company. For the open schedule we can share food prep etc. If you can chip in for food that would be great, but not necessary. DETAILS ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: UPDATES Additional evening presentation (sounds fun!) Preston Bell has offered to do an evening slideshow on the building process of a round straw bale studio at Pine Manor in Southern California with rubble French drain, earth bag base, reciprocal roof, hydronic heated earthen floor painted with a mural and finished with earthen plaster. AND - A really neat Hobbit house also at Pine Manor, which used an existing straw bale entrance wall, added a light clay wall, and then earth bags for the front wall, a round door, locally harvested beams, living roof with a mature pine growing up through the middle and finished with an earthen plaster. House Plans Another participant is hoping to bring the design for the natural building her family will be building in the Southern U.S. Photos Daniel Little of "Heart and Soul" landscaping & natural building in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will bring photos of his company's work!
