Cob: RE: horse hairJoe Skeesick joe at skeesick.comSat Mar 29 12:04:16 CST 2003
Quick comment on the validity of the hair conversation It is most definitely not off topic as a properly constructed cob wall must be protected by a plaster render. The best render you can apply is a lime plaster. The best lime renders contain hair. Easy as that let the conversation continue (at least if Ive got a vote in this ) :-) As to lurkers question . The function of the hair in the plaster is the same as the straw in cob. It works as a reinforcement strand within the plaster helping it to hold together when expanding, contracting or otherwise shifting on the structure. Its a good thing. The only issue I have heard with using human hair is that it is to smooth. That animal hair is coarser. It can still be used, its just not the best. Human hair was used as the crosshairs in rifle scopes, according to my memories.... I'm late in this discussion....so would someone tell me what function the hair served in the plaster? I use hair in my compost.......I cut my honey's hair so he has contributed 10 years worth of it to the piles.... I just spread an 8 year pile on my garden and it showed no hairs at all..... My question has to do with insects....might hair not attract unwanted insects? Or does the lime used in the mix make it unattractive....????
