Cob: Too much linseed oilFirstbrook, Will wfirstb1 at wcb.bc.caFri Aug 22 18:31:05 CDT 2003
Hi Ed, I did use boiled linseed oil. However the only kind we can get up here states that it puts additives in to create a double boiled effect. I used a varathane floor mop to apply the linseed oil over the semi rough floor. This applies a lot more than the rollers I used before. Also I did not thin the linseed oil. That combination caused the problem. The floor has had a 16" fan on for over a month with 2 windows on different walls open. I wish I could find a solvent that will remove partially hardened linseed oil. Paint thinner or methyl alcohol are not strong enough to do the job. The door to the rest of the house is closed so there is some but not a lot of smell of the floor until you enter the room. We were living in the house while fixing it up this summer. Thanks for your reply. Did you use regular linseed oil instead of boiled linseed oil? There is a big difference. You should use only boiled linseed oil. You might try mopping with a solvent and then reapplying the correct stuff, but make sure you have plenty of ventilation. I would even consider leaving the house unoccupied while stripping and applied the new stuff.
