Cob: insects and other plagues

I'm something of a lurker here but I thought I could offer some reassurance RE the mold question.

I lived in Africa for two years at about 6 degrees north of the equator. Most of the buildings in rural areas were made from some sort of mud brick/cob technique and I never saw or heard of a mold problem. This is in a geographical region with two (2!) rainy seasons a year. The only problems I observed where wear on the walls due to having no foundation or roof overhang (there’s not much rock or wood there). I’m pretty allergic to mold so it’s been kind of a crusade for me to find mold/mildew-free housing. Any house with carpet has been a problem – and the absolute worst was a cinder block building that I lived in on one of the NC barrier islands. No amount of scrubbing, mildew blocking paint or chemical could get rid of the problem. That’s my two cents.
