[Cob] SOAKING- not slaking LimeTaylor Publishing-DirtCheapBuilder tms at northcoast.comTue Nov 18 16:38:41 CST 2003
Patrick, first you are SOAKING the lime, slaking is done at the factory. pour clean water into one or more tubs, I use Rubbermaid 32 gal totes with lids, easier to get to the bottom that way, rather than a 55 gal drum. DO NOT leave the lime in the bag, wear a mask and gloves and pour the lime into the clean water, leaving at least 3" water over top ( if you don't the AIR will carbonate the exposed lime back into limestone) . You can fit 1-2 50# sacks of lime into a 32 gal tote. it is putty within a few days, the longer the soaking the more buttery it is when you use it. always wear gloves, alothough the lime putty feels so silky it is tempting to put your hands in it. Any wet clothing from lime water should be removed immediately or wet cloth gloves, as lime ( and cement) can burn some skin. Always have a garden hose or pail of water right there in case of eye splashes...safety first. Have fun with the lime! www.northcoast.com/~tms/render.html has lime info on plasters Ms. Charmaine Taylor/ Taylor Publishing PO Box 375, Cutten CA 95534 707-441-1632 books at dirtcheapbuilder.com http://www.dirtcheapbuilder.com http://www.papercrete.com
